Mojave Getting Sidewalks in 2016

Sidewalks County Plan 20151120Nov 20: Kern County Roads announced in September that Mojave won a $0.9 million grant from California Department of Transportation (CalTrans) to bring Sidewalks to Mojave. The grant, part of CalTrans’ “Safe Routes to School” program, will bring sidewalks to every street in downtown Mojave, and ensure children and pedestrians can walk safely and confidently throughout our community. Mojave tied with two other cities in California for the highest score among 617 applications competing for $180 million in state-wide transportation funding. Kern County will also contribute $350,000 to bring the total project to $1.2 million.

Sidewalks - family walkingSidewalks will extend from Sierra Highway to the Airport, and from highway 58 to the overpass on the north end of town. Sidewalks will also be installed along Barstow Road in Mojave Gardens. Construction is expected to begin by the end of 2016.

The Mojave Foundation is proud to have contributed to the this project, and liaised between Kern County Roads, Mojave Unified School District, Kern Country Sheriff’s Office, Mojave Air & Space Port, and a myriad of other stakeholders in the community who wrote dozens of letters of support. The Foundation also looks forward to capitalizing on this progress by restoring Streetlights and other safety improvements in our streets.

Mojave High Sponsors E-Waste Recycling Day

E-waste flyerThis Saturday, October 11, please bring your old TV, computer, microwave, 8-track… anything with a power chord – and bring it to the Mojave High School parking lot. Drop off is completely free, and is an environmentally-responsible way to dispose of used electronic equipment. The event is sponsored by the Mojave High Science Club, who will be there from 8am to 3pm on Saturday. They will even come pick it up for your if you need help. Call 661-824-4088 (ext 326) if you have any questions or need help transporting your electronics.

More Houses Demolished Downtown!

15734 L StMarch 7: Another derelict house came down on the 15700 block of L Street today, the fourth structure to be removed in three months. Another hazardous structure on L Street will be demolished on Monday, and another two houses on K Street in the next several weeks and months. The houses were demolished by Sturgeon Services, a Bakersfield contractor hired by Kern County Code Compliance. Code Compliance has also cleaned and boarded up eight houses since September – on K Street, L Street, M Street, and Mojave Gardens. These buildings are a magnet for drugs and crime, and depress property values in our most vulnerable areas. Demolishing and securing these structures  creates space for economic development to take root, and is critical to the future revitalization of this community. The Mojave Foundation is proud to help coordinate and prioritize the county’s demolition and cleanup efforts, and looks forward to raising housing standards in Mojave.

Mojave stands up Volunteer Police Unit

Mojave Foundation is pleased to report 32 residents and business owners have volunteered to join the Citizen Service Unit (CSU). Our first official meeting is Thursday, July 18th in the Airport boardroom. Due to the overwelming support from the community, Kern County Sheriff’s Office has offered to send officials to Mojave to conduct all the administrative and training requirements locally, rather than making all the volunteers travel to Bakersfield. Mojave Foundation would like to thank SGT Williams for his ongoing support in standing up this unit, and we look forward to working with KCSO.

We feel that the CSU program is the first step to fundamentally changing expectations in Mojave, and convincing people that Mojave is a safe place to live and do business. CSUs perform non-hazardous law enforcement, and will never be asked to be in a confrontational situation. However, CSUs are another set of eyes and ears on the street, or they perform administrative duties to free up a deputy’s time so that he can get back on the street. The CSU program will make an impact in Mojave, as we are raising the cost of committing crime in this community.
